With increased awareness of neurodiversity, more adults are inquiring about certain disorders like attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). At Positive Mind Wellness, we provide ADHD assessment for adults along with treatment services so that you can better manage your day-to-day life armed with the knowledge and tools you need.

What is an ADHD Assessment?

An ADHD assessment is a thorough method of screening for ADHD in adults. It combines psychometric tests, collateral information, and clinical interviews with a psychologist for you and others close to you that may provide useful insight into your functioning.

Our assessment also provides differential diagnosis. This means that our assessment is designed to differentiate between an ADHD diagnosis and other conditions with overlapping symptoms (e.g. anxiety, depression, burnout, OCD, etc.). Our assessment also includes evaluation for some of these conditions and others.

What Happens During an ADHD Assessment?

Our detailed ADHD assessment involves a few steps to give us a full picture of your overall functioning and areas where you may be struggling to cope. We offer both in-person and virtual (video) assessments over a secure teleconferencing platform, allowing us to provide services throughout Ontario.

We meet with you and anyone in your support network to understand your daily functioning. Not everyone is impacted by ADHD in the same way, so it’s important for us to learn what areas you think are being affected.

Our psychologist will interview you about your personal history, covering areas such as education, employment, family, and medical history. You will also fill out self-report questionnaires. Additionally, the psychologist will conduct psychological testing.

To have a fuller picture of how you have functioned in multiple areas over different periods of time, it is helpful (but not mandatory) to have collateral information. This includes medical records, school report cards, letters from family members, and any other psychological or psychiatric assessment reports.

After the assessment, you’ll receive the psychologist’s detailed report that includes:

  • DSM 5 psychological diagnosis(es)
  • education about the diagnosis(es)
  • Targeted evidence-based treatment options
  • Self-directed and lifestyle changes

Our psychologist will schedule a follow-up appointment with you to discuss the results of your assessment. You will be able to ask any questions about the conclusion and recommendations about the final report.

Who Can Benefit from an ADHD Assessment?

If you’ve noticed that your work, relationships, and other areas of life are affected by your inattention, difficulty focusing, hyperactivity, or impulsivity but do not have an official ADHD diagnosis, consider finding out whether you might have been undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

Our ADHD assessment is designed for adults, so anyone ages 18 and up who suspects they might have undiagnosed ADHD can book an assessment with us.

What Treatments Are Included?

Adult ADHD symptoms vary from person to person. Common ones include difficulty concentrating or completing tasks, struggling to follow instructions, avoiding mentally taxing tasks, forgetfulness, restlessness in quiet environments or activities, interrupting others, impulsive decision-making, mood swings, and impatience. Our treatment services seek to manage these and other symptoms so you can function better as an individual as well as in relation to others.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

CBT is a short-term, goal-oriented therapy that focuses on how you think and behave. By reframing how you think and feel about yourself, you will recognize your capabilities and gain skills to overcome the mental hurdles that lead to procrastination, poor time management, and other symptoms.

DBT Skills Training

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is similar to CBT. However, it focuses more on the social and emotional challenges that come with having ADHD. It helps you manage your emotions, behaviours, and relationships through mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and managing interpersonal relationships.

Advantages of Seeking an ADHD Assessment

When you’ve been living with undiagnosed ADHD, it can be hard to see how your life is being impacted and can be helped with the right knowledge and coping strategies. Getting an adult ADHD assessment is the first step in recognizing where you’re struggling so you can begin to increase your self-awareness and confidence, improve your relationships, enhance your work performance, manage stress more effectively, discover how to compensate for your challenges, and improve your overall well-being.
