What is a Psychoeducational Assessment?

A psychoeducational assessment helps to better understand a child’s cognitive skills and learning capabilities. We spend one-on-one time with them to discover their greatest strengths and where they may need more support.

Think of this assessment as a roadmap — it allows us to see if your child might have a learning disability, a developmental disabilility or any other issues with behaviour or emotional regulation.

Why Consider a Psychoeducational Assessment?

The main reason to consider a psychoeducational assessment is to provide an age-referenced profile of a child’s learning, cognitive, and behavioral functionals along with identifying the source of academic challenges. Unlike standard tests, our individualized assessment under controlled conditions accurately identifies unique developmental timelines, learning styles, and potential neurodevelopmental, psychological, or behavioral issues.

After these tests and interviews are completed and our highly skilled psychologists have finalized the evaluation, this information can be used in the following ways:

  • To identify areas of cognitive strength and weakness.
  • To select the most appropriate educational environment
  • To determine the necessary school supports and accommodations for academic success.
  • To assist in the school identification process and ensure proper essential accommodations
  • To support claims for academic equipment subsidies.
  • To  help guide future career decisions.
  • To help choose suitable extracurricular activities and enrichment opportunities.
  • To apply for government-funded disability subsidies.

When Should You Test?

If you suspect that your child exhibits any of these behaviours, a psychoeducational evaluation should be considered for:

  • Losing interest in school
  • Having trouble understanding new concepts
  • Low self-confidence
  • Poor time management skills
  • Regularly complaining about homework
  • Learning disabilities
  • Mood disorders
  • Neurodevelopmental disorders
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Our Evaluation Process

The assessment process unfolds in several stages:

During the initial intake interview, your clinician will discuss confidentiality, privacy, and access to information. You’ll have the opportunity to freely express your concerns, followed by a comprehensive review of your background information, including developmental, family, medical, and educational history. For children, there will be ice-breaker activities to establish rapport. Paperwork and questionnaires will be provided and must be completed prior to the testing appointment.

Individuals typically undergo 4-6 hours of testing with a preference for morning sessions to accommodate the energy levels of children. Time is allocated for breaks and lunch, and parents have the option to leave if desired. After each testing session, data are scored and analyzed.

Feedback, Recommendations, and Report

Assessment results are shared, any findings are explained, and scores are presented and discussed. You will have the opportunity to ask questions, provide input, and discuss recommendations. If needed and desired, referrals to other professionals are arranged. Following feedback, a comprehensive report is furnished, summarizing results and outlining intervention suggestions tailored to the individual’s specific needs. The report is designed to be a comprehensive roadmap for clients and as a valuable resource for educators and medical professionals alike (if disclosed). It can aid in the creation of an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP), which is helpful to increase academic success, self-esteem, and social-emotional development. We maintain the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality throughout our assessment process, with the utmost respect and care for our clientele.

Our Approach to Psychoeducational Assessment

At Positive Mind Wellness, our assessment style is comprehensive. We take many things into consideration like a child’s preferred learning style, behavioural patterns and their emotional responses. These are some of the ways we stand out:

Holistic Approach

With a holistic approach, we work on understanding every child as a whole and review their strengths, struggles, coping mechanisms and learning styles.

Comprehensive Assessment

We understand that each child learns differently. That’s why we provide a comprehensive assessment to examine the child as a whole instead of isolating specific issues. We review certain aspects like their cognitive and learning style, behavioural patterns.

Evidence-based report

We want every child to excel and achieve academic success. This is why we rely on recommendations based on evidence to take their learning to the next level. We begin by identifying the needs of a child and providing a psychoeducational assessment report using specific recommendations.

How To Prepare Your Child For Assessment

Having an open and honest conversation with your child is key. Answer any questions they may have and provide some details about their appointment like who will be there, the types of activities they may do, etc.

We encourage parents to bring water and a snack to maintain your child’s energy levels throughout their appointment. Breaks are provided during the assessment as it allows children to remain focused on the task at hand.

You may speak with our team to learn more about the environment, how long the assessment will be and who they will meet.
