At Positive Mind Wellness, our nutritional counselling services provide personalized, practical support to help you build a healthier relationship with food and make informed choices that fit your life.

Nutrition is not one-size-fits-all. Your health needs may be influenced by your medical history, lifestyle, culture, finances, family responsibilities, sensory preferences, mental health, and relationship with food. Our Registered Dietitians take the time to understand the whole person before developing realistic recommendations tailored to your needs and goals.

Whether you are managing a health condition, navigating digestive concerns, improving your energy, or seeking guidance around everyday nutrition, our team is here to support you without judgment or unnecessary restriction.

Who Can Benefit From Nutritional Counselling?

You do not need to have a diagnosed medical condition or follow a specific diet to work with a Registered Dietitian. Nutritional counselling can support you and your family at many different stages of life.

Our services may benefit:

  • Adults seeking practical nutrition guidance
  • Children, adolescents, and their caregivers
  • Individuals managing chronic health conditions
  • People experiencing digestive concerns
  • Pregnant and postpartum clients
  • Individuals planning for pregnancy
  • People experiencing changes in appetite or energy
  • Individuals looking to improve their relationship with food
  • People following vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, or culturally specific diets
  • Individuals with food allergies or intolerances
  • Families seeking support with meal planning
  • People navigating life transitions that affect eating habits

Your dietitian will consider your priorities, health history, preferences, and circumstances before making recommendations.

Concerns Nutritional Counselling Can Help With

Our Registered Dietitians provide individualized support across a range of nutrition and wellness concerns.

Everyday Healthy Eating

Nutrition information can be confusing and contradictory. A Registered Dietitian can help you understand your nutritional needs, evaluate health information, and build balanced, flexible, sustainable eating habits.

Digestive Health

Nutritional counselling may help you manage symptoms associated with digestive concerns, including bloating, constipation, diarrhea, reflux, food intolerances, and irritable bowel syndrome. Your dietitian can help identify patterns, discuss appropriate dietary strategies, and collaborate with your physician or other healthcare providers when further medical assessment is required.

Diabetes and Blood-Sugar Management

Nutrition is an important part of managing your diabetes, prediabetes, insulin resistance, or blood-sugar fluctuations. A Registered Dietitian can help you understand how food affects blood sugar and develop realistic strategies that suit your lifestyle.

Heart Health

Nutritional counselling can support individuals managing high cholesterol, elevated blood pressure, and other cardiovascular risk factors. Your recommendations may focus on balanced eating patterns, fibre, sodium, fats, and practical changes that support your long-term heart health.

Weight-Related Concerns

Our approach focuses on your health, sustainable habits, and individual goals rather than shame, extreme restriction, or quick fixes. Your dietitian can help you look at your eating patterns, appetite, and any barriers that may be making change difficult, then work with you on realistic strategies to support your health.

Food Allergies and Intolerances

Managing your food allergy or intolerance can make eating stressful and complicated. A Registered Dietitian can help you identify appropriate substitutions, reduce the risk of nutritional deficiencies, read food labels, and create balanced meals within your dietary restrictions.

Women’s and Reproductive Health

Nutritional counselling may support you as you navigate menstruation-related concerns, polycystic ovary syndrome, fertility treatment, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and menopause. We design nutrition care to complement, not replace, your medical and reproductive healthcare.

Prenatal and Postpartum Nutrition

Your nutritional needs can change throughout pregnancy and after childbirth. Our Registered Dietitians can provide guidance related to prenatal nutrition, nausea, appetite changes, gestational diabetes, postpartum recovery, and feeding demands.

Pediatric and Family Nutrition

Feeding your child can be challenging, particularly when there are sensory sensitivities, selective eating patterns, behavioural concerns, allergies, digestive symptoms, or changing nutritional needs. Our dietitians can work collaboratively with parents and caregivers to develop practical, age-appropriate strategies that reduce stress and support the child’s growth and well-being.

Mental Health and Nutrition

Your mental health can affect your appetite, motivation, energy, grocery shopping, meal preparation, and your ability to maintain regular eating patterns. Nutritional counselling can provide practical support if you’re experiencing stress, anxiety, depression, burnout, or major life changes. As part of our multidisciplinary environment, Registered Dietitians may collaborate with psychotherapists and other healthcare professionals — with your consent — to support both nutritional and emotional well-being.

Our Approach to Nutritional Counselling

Our approach is compassionate, collaborative, and grounded in evidence-informed care. We recognize that food is connected to much more than physical health. Your family, culture, identity, finances, accessibility, emotions, and personal experience can also shape it.

Your nutrition plan will be based on your needs, not a generic meal plan or restrictive set of rules.

We focus on realistic strategies you can incorporate into your daily life. Your recommendations may include meal planning, grocery-shopping support, food substitutions, label reading, balanced meal ideas, and strategies for eating consistently.

Your cultural and religious food practices are an important part of your care. Our dietitians work with you to develop recommendations that respect your traditions, values, and preferred foods.

You can speak openly about your eating habits, challenges, and goals. Our role is to provide professional guidance and support, not to criticize, shame, or impose unrealistic expectations.

When appropriate and with your consent, your Registered Dietitian may collaborate with your physician, therapist, psychologist, nurse, or another member of your healthcare team.

What to Expect in Nutritional Counselling

Each appointment is customized to your health concerns, goals, and required level of support.

Your first appointment provides an opportunity to discuss your:

  • Health and medical history
  • Current eating patterns
  • Food allergies or intolerances
  • Medications and supplements
  • Lifestyle and daily routine
  • Cultural or religious food practices
  • Budget and access to food
  • Relationship with food
  • Current challenges and priorities
  • Short- and long-term goals

You do not need to prepare a perfect food journal or change your eating habits before your first appointment.

Following your assessment, your dietitian will work with you to identify realistic priorities. Your plan may include nutrition education, meal and snack ideas, symptom-management strategies, food substitutions, or small behavioural goals.

Follow-up sessions allow you and your dietitian to review progress, discuss challenges, answer questions, and adjust recommendations. Nutrition care is collaborative, and your plan can change as your health, circumstances, and goals evolve.

Some clients require only a few appointments, while others benefit from longer-term support. The recommended frequency will depend on your concerns, treatment goals, and preferences.

Why Work With a Registered Dietitian?

  • Help identify nutritional risks and possible deficiencies
  • Support changes without relying on fad diets
  • Collaborate with other members of your healthcare team
  • Help you evaluate confusing or conflicting nutrition information

The title “Registered Dietitian” is legally protected in Ontario. This helps ensure you receive nutrition care from a qualified, accountable professional.

Eleanor Ellis, Registered Dietitian

Eleanor Ellis is a Registered Dietitian who graduated with Honours from Toronto Metropolitan University with a Bachelor of Applied Science in Food and Nutrition. She also holds a Master of Health Science in Nutrition Communication.

Eleanor brings extensive clinical experience from hospital settings, including The Hospital for Sick Children and Mackenzie Health. Her areas of particular expertise include weight management, metabolic health, and the relationship between nutrition and mental health. She is also knowledgeable across a broad range of nutrition and dietetic concerns.

Eleanor takes a holistic and individualized approach to nutritional counselling. She recognizes that eating habits are influenced by more than nutritional knowledge alone; emotions, mental health, routines, relationships, culture, and life circumstances can all affect how people eat and care for themselves.

By considering both the nutritional and psychological aspects of health, Eleanor helps clients better understand their eating patterns, identify barriers, and develop practical strategies that support meaningful and sustainable change. Her approach is collaborative and non-judgmental, with recommendations tailored to each client’s health needs, lifestyle, preferences, and personal goals.

Nutritional Counselling FAQs

You generally don’t need a referral to work with a Registered Dietitian in private practice. However, your insurance provider may require one for reimbursement. Certain symptoms or medical concerns may also require you to see a physician first.

We may incorporate meal planning when it’s appropriate and helpful, but nutritional counselling involves more than receiving a fixed menu from us. Your dietitian will work with you to develop flexible strategies that reflect your nutritional needs, food preferences, schedule, budget, and lifestyle.

No. We support many concerns unrelated to weight, including digestive health, allergies, pregnancy, pediatric nutrition, chronic disease management, low appetite, meal planning, and general wellness.

A dietitian can support your nutrition-related challenges associated with mental health, such as changes in appetite, irregular eating, low energy, and difficulty planning or preparing food. Nutritional counselling doesn’t replace your psychotherapy or medical care, but it can be part of your interdisciplinary treatment plan.

OHIP generally does not cover private-practice dietitian services. However, your extended health insurance plan may cover services provided by a Registered Dietitian. Confirm your eligibility, annual limits, and referral requirements directly with your insurer.
